Data Management Standards
ANSI/GEIA-859

MDM is proud to announce the development and release of ANSI/GEIA-859, a standard for performance-based Data Management. MDM has lead the team of developers for this standard – and its associated implementation handbook – throughout a four year effort. The standard is an industry/government consensus-based approach to the acquisition, management, access, use, review, acceptance, archival, and disposal of data. It incorporates the original intent of data management with the evolution and migration of the data environment from one of hardcopy, library management to the digital, tool-based environment.

ANSI/GEIA-859 also provides for the identification, management, and protection of intellectual property and competitive edge data.

The sponsorship of this project was provided by the Department of Defense and is joined by its constituent services and agencies, in conjunction with a consortium of prime contractors including Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Boeing Defense and Boeing Commercial Aircraft, and Logistics Management Institute. The development of the standard took place within TechAmerica (www.itaa.org), and began in 2001 at one of its quarterly meetings.

ANSI/GEIA-859 and its handbook are available for purchase through industry standards vendors and at www.geia.org.

MDM invites your inquiries and questions on the content of the standard, and are appreciative of your comments regarding the value and use of the document.
